Kidney cancer is a condition that occurs when cells in the kidneys proliferate out of control, forming a mass known as a tumour.
Most kidney cancers are discovered found during the evaluation of other medical concerns as patients do not commonly present with kidney cancer symptoms in the early stages of the condition. As the tumour develops, patients may notice the following signs and symptoms
Fatigue and anaemia
Abdominal and loin pain
Sensation of a mass in the abdomen
Blood in urine
Unintentional weight loss and loss of appetite
Fever and night sweats
Identifying the cancer stage is important because it helps to ascertain whether the kidney cancer has spread, and to determine the extent of the spread.
This will also determine the prognosis of the patient and their kidney cancer treatment plan. Determining the cancer stage is one of the main factors that are taken into account while discussing survival statistics.
Stage 1 cancer indicates the tumour is localised only in the kidney and is ≤ 7 cm.
Stage 2 cancer depicts the tumour is localised in the kidney and can be more than 7 cm.
Stage 3 cancer indicates the tumour has infiltrated adjacent structures.
Stage 4 refers to kidney cancer that has spread beyond the kidney.
A detailed medical history, including kidney cancer symptoms, past medical history, family and social history and medication list, will be taken in conjunction with a physical examination for a thorough assessment. Several diagnostic investigations may also be carried out to confirm the diagnosis, including the following:
These tests are typically carried out to look for abnormalities in the blood and urine.
These imaging tests are useful to diagnose kidney cancer as they provide detailed information about the renal tumour.
These investigations are beneficial in examining the insides of urinary structures to rule out cancers including the renal pelvis, bladder, and ureter.
Renal biopsy involves the removal of a small tissue sample to confirm the diagnosis of kidney cancer in selected cases.
While most late-stage kidney cancers have poor outcomes, a large percentage of early-stage kidney cancers are associated with a good prognosis, making early detection and treatment of kidney cancer important.
Early detection and prompt treatment will also increase the likelihood of successful surgical removal of the tumour in its early stages, negating the need for any extensive treatments or procedures.
Complications such as high blood pressure, high levels of calcium and red blood cells in the blood, kidney failure, and local and distant metastasis are associated in patients with kidney cancer, making early diagnosis and treatment essential.
